There are a number of specific steps that must be completed to form an LLC in Montana.  The main of which is to complete the Articles of Organization, which must have the appropriate information.  Once you complete the articles of Organization, you will need to submit them to the Secretary of State and pay the required filing fee.  Once submitted, the State will review the paperwork and hopefully approve your newly registered LLC for use.

Choosing a Good Name for a Montana LLC

The Montana limited liability company will have to be available and not in use by another company before you can register it.  You will also need to ensure that it has one of the following ending identifiers:

  2. Limited Company
  3. LLC
  4. L.L.C.
  5. L.C.
  6. LC
  7. ltd. liability co.
  8. ltd. co.

The name of each limited liability company as set forth in its articles of organization must contain the words "limited liability company" or "limited company" or the abbreviations "l.l.c.", "l.c.", "llc", or "lc". The word "limited" may be abbreviated as "ltd.", and the word "company" may be abbreviated as "co.". 

Incorporate in Montana

When a company chooses to file for a Montana corporation, they will need to file the appropriate paperwork with the Secretary of State.  In order to register you will need to submit your Articles of Incorporation with an available name that meets the name requirements as defined in the state code.  The name must contain the word "corporation", "incorporated", "company", or "limited"; the abbreviation "corp.", "inc.", "co.", or "ltd."; or words or abbreviations of similar meaning in another language;  Here are the appropriate ending name identifiers:

  3. company
  4. limited
  5. corp
  6. inc.
  7. co.
  8. ltd.

In addition to having the appropriate ending identifier, you must also avoid using reserved words unless you have approval from the right agency ( Bank, Banc cannot be used without approval )
